Controlled Puck Erosion: What I Learned Prototyping Softflow

During the design, evaluation, and prototyping phases of Softflow, I observed some unique attributes in the final iteration that, initially, I didn’t fully comprehend.

Even though the raw tests showed consistent flow rates and extremely uniform distribution, a few persistent questions kept coming back to me:

  • Why was it significantly better at reducing channeling?
  • Why was its impact much more pronounced when extracting light roasts compared to dark roasts?
  • And why did its real-world results seem to mimic the benefits of a step-down basket?

With further testing, I came to understand that while superior flow dynamics are critical, it was the controlled nature of this flow—and how it radically improved puck erosion—that compounded Softflow's true value.

First, Let Us Consider the Step-Down Basket

To understand what Softflow is doing, it helps to look at how a step-down basket achieves its results. Because of its shape, a step-down basket creates a thicker puck depth. This deeper depth increases resistance, which naturally requires you to use a slightly coarser grind to compensate. It is this coarser grind that facilitates more even saturation and reduced channelling to ultimately benefit the flavour and consistency of your extractions.

Softflow, on the other hand, does not create added physical resistance or puck depth. So how does it achieve a remarkably similar effect? The answer lies in reduced puck erosion, which unexpectedly unlocks the same ability to use a slightly coarser grind.

Controlling Puck Erosion

Normally, as an espresso puck erodes over the course of an extraction, water naturally accelerates through the most dissolved pathways– water will always follow the path of least resistance. This doesn't just impact how water moves through the puck, but also, how it interacts right at the screen. Typically, this results in a centrally eroded puck, with the channelling effect worsening the longer the shot runs.

But because Softflow actively leverages pressure to compel flow uniformity, water is forced to distribute evenly all the time–from the start of your pull to the very end. It cannot freely exploit or create eroded pathways, which allows for puck integrity to persist for longer. This makes the erosion that does happen incredibly homogeneous across the entire volume of your puck. (youtube video link)
The Chain Reaction

When you consider the physics of your extraction, the value of Softflow comes down to a compounding cause-and-effect loop:

  • Uniform distribution -> leads to more even saturation.
  • More even saturation -> leads to highly uniform extraction.
  • Uniform extraction -> drastically slows down localized puck erosion.
  • Homogeneous erosion -> prolongs puck integrity, and naturally extends your shot duration.
  • Longer shot durations -> allow you to shift to a slightly coarser grind setting.
  • A coarser grind size -> unlocks better consistency, higher repeatability and exceptional balance.

It is this holistic shift in extraction dynamics—not just a mechanical filtering of water—that allows Softflow to bring greater balance, sweetness, and complexity to your cup.
The Marked Difference with Lighter Roasts

This brings us back to one of my original questions:
why does Softflow impact light roasts so much more keenly than dark roasts?

Due to their higher density and lower solubility, light-roasted coffees are notoriously difficult to extract evenly. They require finer grind sizes that are inherently more prone to channeling.

Because Softflow compels flow uniformity to reduce channeling and mitigate puck erosion, it prevents the water from carving out early channels. This drastically increases effective contact time across the entire volume of the coffee bed, rather than letting water rush through a few dissolved pathways.

While a darker roast is already highly soluble and forgiving, a light roast benefits more from this dynamic. By protecting the puck from uneven erosion, Softflow helps alleviate these common extraction challenges—which is why the improvement in clarity and balance is particularly apparent when brewing more demanding, light-roasted coffees.
